Attitude Adjustment

He did warn me but I wanted to be daring

Exotic name, a little recklessness, I was past caring

More keen on the thrill and trying out something new

Than thinking about the content, the price or the hue

When the huge fishbowl of dark liquid arrived

I instantly reacted, not what I ordered, I denied

My companion was doubled over with laughter

I would never hear the end of this event hereafter

In fact, a picture of this caricature was taken

I distanced myself, my attitude severely shaken

But isn’t this what life is  about, isn’t it full of surprises?

Adjusting our perspectives, wearing various disguises

Twenty years ago I would never have guessed

That I’d be dining amidst the country’s  best

That my colour would be the shade sought after

That I would dare to differ and play the martyr

Yes, we laughed until we cried

But no blood was shed and no one died

I adjusted my attitude and paid the bill

A small price compared with those who had to kill

So another evening passed with good fun

Another day to look forward to the rising sun

Another day we’ll spend adjusting attitudes

Sometimes with persuasion, or simple platitudes

And one day we’ll remember

That special day in September

When we roamed the street feeling carefree

Momentarily enjoying the unharried spree
